Where & when to go

in Australia

New South Wales

New South Wales is a year-round destination, so the best time to visit varies according to what you have planned for your stay. From June to September, you can ski and snowboard in the high alpine country, whilst November to March is ideal for sun-filled beach holidays. The climate here is temperate, with cool winters and warm to hot summers. Head to the north-west portion of the state and you’ll find the hottest weather, while the coldest area is found in the snowy mountains.

Northern Territory

While the Northern Territory is a year-round destination, it’s wise to take into account the extremely hot summers that this state experiences in the inland region. Likewise, you should prepare for the heat, humidity and rainfall during the wet season of the Top End. In this tropical portion, the daytime temperatures average between 30 and 35 degrees throughout the year. The dry season, between May and October, has sunny days while the wet season, between November and April, is hot and humid with tropical storms. Further from the coast, the seasons become more distinct.

Northern Queensland

Queensland is a great place to visit all year, with warm summers and mild winters. From November to March, Queensland experiences warmer weather – their winter is from April to October. The climate here ranges from hot and humid in the north to cooler temperatures in the south-east. The inland west has low rainfall, along with hot summers and dry, mild winters.

Southern Queensland

Queensland is a great place to visit all year, with warm summers and mild winters. From November to March, Queensland experiences warmer weather – their winter is from April to October. The climate here ranges from hot and humid in the north to cooler temperatures in the south-east. The inland west has low rainfall, along with hot summers and dry, mild winters.

South Australia

While South Australia is a year-round destination, be sure to take care when you’re visiting the inland region as this area can get extremely hot during the summer months. There is a temperate climate here, particularly on the coast, with hot summers and cool winters. In the summer, between November and March, the outback can get extremely hot and caution should be taken if you’re planning on visiting in or around this area during this time.

Tasmania

The best time to visit Tasmania is between October and April – during this time, the weather is at its best. There is a maritime climate here which leads the island to experience warm summers, sunny days and beautiful seasonal colours in autumn, cold winters and mild yet unpredictable springs. The rainfall in Tasmania varied wildly across the island – Hobart is the second-driest capital city in Australia yet the west coast regularly experiences heavy rainfall.

Victoria

Victoria is a fantastic place to visit if you’re a fan of sports, with many popular sporting events taking place in Melbourne throughout the year. If you’d prefer to get out and about to see the landscape, walking holidays are best taken during Victoria’s spring (October to November) and autumn (April and May). There is a mild climate here, with four very distinct seasons – warm or hot summers, mild autumns, cool to cold winters and mild springs. As you move across the state the climate varies, getting drier and warmer the more north you go.

Western Australia

Pleasant climates and wonderful attractions make Western Australia a great place to visit. The best time to take a trip to this state is between April and September which is Western Australia’s dry season. The temperature during this time is not as hot and the access is better, as many roads close in wetter weather. Perth sits in the south of the state, where the temperature is sunny and warm, with distinct seasons.

Everything worked very well and Hannah chose an excellent hotel for our final night in Sydney. - Pamela Evans
