Cairns to Atherton (94km)
Once you’ve collected your car, your journey will start in Cairns – the spectacular gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Begin by driving to Kuranda, a charming and cultural village in the rainforest, before stopping off Mareefa for a flavourful regional coffee and ending the day’s journey in the town of Atherton, home to the Atherton Tablelands.
Today you’ll depart Atherton and drive via Malanda to Ravenshoe, stopping at Malanda Falls to marvel at the wonderful rainforest and take a dip in the natural pools. Once in Ravenshoe, travel to Innot Hot Springs to discover its unique thermal mineral springs, before moving on to Undara Volcanic National Park for a wonderful Wildlife at Sunset tour and to toast a beautiful sunset with a sparkling wine.
Charters Towers (380km)
The morning will be spent at Undara, enjoying a breakfast at ringer camp before spending half the day on a fascinating Lava Tube tour – taking you through Lava Tube systems formed 190,000 years ago. Afterwards you will travel to the Lynd Junction, home to Australia’s smallest bar, before continuing to Charters Towers via Darlrymple National Park, full of ancient lava flows.
Begin the day by exploring characterful Charters Towers to learn about its gold rush history. You’ll then enjoy a leisurely drive along the Flinders Highway to the vibrant city of Townsville, home to lively waterfronts and fun attractions. Take a picturesque walk along the waterfront esplanade ‘The Strand’ in the evening.
Townsville & Mission Beach (235km)
Your morning will be free for you to explore Townsville, including visiting Reef HQ – a fantastic aquarium, the Museum of Tropical Queensland, or simply dipping in and out of restaurants and shops. You’ll then drive north towards Mission Beach. There are many brilliant stops you may want to visit on the way, including Frosty Mango with its homemade tropical fruit ice cream, the cascading Wallaman Falls, and Big or Little Crystal Creek in the Paluma Range National Park for an al fresco picnic.
The whole day is free for you to enjoy everything Mission Beach has to offer. Relax on the beach, take part in exhilarating water sports, sport wildlife, and try out tasty restaurants.
Today you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through Mena Creek, before visiting the impressive Paronella Park – a fascinating area full of heritage and culture. Your journey to Cairns comes with many brilliant stops, including the historic sugar town of South Johnstone, Innisfall’s bright Art Deco buildings, the towering boulders at Wooroonooran National Park, and the home of Noongyanbudda Ngadjon-jii people – Josephine Falls.
Your car is booked until the following day. To avoid an additional charge, your car must be dropped off at the city or airport by the same time as it was picked up on day one.
